Tom Jones- She’s A Lady

May 7, 2009 sfoshee

The song, She’s A Lady, was written and recorded by Tom Jones in the early 1970’s and gives in sharp detail the ideal woman. The song emphasizes that everything about her that is mentioned within the song is what makes her a “winner.” The lyrics describe a woman that is classy, graceful, never in the way, and always saying nice things, and can take what he dishes out. Although he says he won’t abuse her. This shows how men used to think of women and still sometimes do. A woman is expected to be subservient to the man and his needs. In romantic relationships, men are expected to have the lead role in which the woman asks the man for permission to spend money or go out with friends. The man is not expected to take care of the woman unless he desires to.

This song was produced before the civil rights movement was complete and long before women were more commonly accepted as equals. The song represents a woman as needing to be quiet and not questioning of the man. It is more common within relationships of today, that the woman shares the dominant role with the man and sometimes even is completely the dominating one in the relationship. Some men still live out of the 1950’s, but many love songs today flaunt about how sweet a woman is and how the guy would do anything for her. Guys aren’t as afraid to admit they are whipped, but sometimes it is still seen as a feminine quality.
